I love the season of life that God has me in right now. I am completely out of control…and loving it! I am a wife (of a very handsome man by the way), mom of a preschooler and an infant (both equally delicious), a pastor at my church (I LOVE my church) and wait for it.....a part time nurse (at night!) Yeah, it’s pretty crazy. There are times I wonder about God’s timing and in those moments I make a purposeful effort to continue to surrender my life to Him completely. The idea of living a life of surrender is a mega-theme in my life. The Princess Bride happens to be one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time and there’s a line in that movie that grips my heart every time I hear it. Wesley is an ordinary man in love with the nymph-like Princess Buttercup. Albeit his love is unrequited, every time Buttercup asks him to do something, even a menial task, Wesley would always and only respond with 3 words; as you wish. The narrator then adds, “When Wesley says as you wish, what he was really saying was, ‘I love you.’” For some reason that line takes me to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane praying in Luke 22:42, “Father, not my will but yours be done.” What Jesus was really saying was Father, as you wish, and there is no greater picture of surrender and true love!
If I profess to love God I also profess to surrender myself completely to Him no matter what I feel, no matter what my fears and insecurities are, no matter what. Contrary to popular belief, surrendering is not passive resignation, fatalism or laziness. It's not for cowards or doormats. Surrender does not mean giving up rational thinking or giving up your uniqueness and becoming a “vanilla” person. True surrender to God does not diminish who you are, it actually does the opposite. CS Lewis says,
“The more we let God take us over, the more truly ourselves we become, because He made us."
As we continue to surrender to God, we discover that He is not a tyrant but a savior, not a boss but a brother, not a dictator but a friend. Life gets out of control sometimes, but no matter what you are going through right now, trust God, surrender yourself to Him. Prayerfully tell God, “As you wish Lord, as you wish.” There is nothing more powerful in the hands of a supernatural God, than a life that is totally and completely surrendered to Him.
